This winter drive in Liechtenstein begins in the small but famous capital city of Vaduz, located at an elevation of about 470 meters (1,541 ft) above sea level. Despite its small size, Vaduz is the political and cultural center of the Principality of Liechtenstein. The town lies along the eastern bank of the Rhine River and is overlooked by the iconic Vaduz Castle, the residence of the Princely Family. Surrounded by vineyards and Alpine scenery, Vaduz offers beautiful views toward the mountains that form the border between Liechtenstein, Switzerland, and Austria.
Leaving Vaduz, the road heads south toward the town of Triesen. This is one of the oldest settlements in Liechtenstein, with a history that goes back to Roman times. Triesen sits slightly higher on the valley side and is known for its quiet residential areas, traditional houses, and views of the Rhine Valley. The landscape begins to change here as the road slowly starts climbing toward the mountain communities above the valley.
The drive continues upward to Triesenberg, a charming mountain village perched high above the Rhine Valley. Triesenberg sits at around 880 meters above sea level and is famous for its Walser heritage. The Walser people migrated here in the Middle Ages from the Swiss canton of Valais, bringing their own dialect and culture that still exists today. From Triesenberg, the views become spectacular, overlooking the entire Rhine Valley and the surrounding Alpine peaks.
Beyond Triesenberg, the road becomes more mountainous and scenic as it winds through forests and alpine slopes toward the small settlement of Steg. This peaceful village lies in a high alpine valley and is known for its quiet atmosphere and natural beauty. In winter, the surrounding landscape is often covered in snow, creating a picturesque Alpine environment. The nearby Steg Reservoir (Steg-Stausee) reflects the surrounding mountains and forests, adding to the beauty of the area.
The final part of the journey climbs deeper into the mountains toward Malbun, Liechtenstein’s main winter sports village. Malbun is located at around 1,600 meters (5,250 ft) above sea level and is surrounded by impressive Alpine peaks. This area is part of the Rätikon mountain range, a dramatic section of the Alps that stretches along the borders of Liechtenstein, Austria, and Switzerland.
Several notable mountains rise around the valley, including Augstenberg (2,359 m), Falknis (2,562 m), and the prominent Naafkopf (2,570 m), which marks the tripoint between Liechtenstein, Austria, and Switzerland. These mountains create a dramatic backdrop for the village and make the area popular for skiing, snowboarding, and winter hiking.
The road from Vaduz to Malbun is one of the most scenic mountain drives in Liechtenstein. In winter, the landscape transforms into a quiet Alpine wonderland with forests, steep mountain slopes, and snow-covered peaks. Even though Liechtenstein is one of the smallest countries in the world, this short journey reveals a surprising variety of landscapes—from vineyards in the Rhine Valley to high alpine scenery in the mountains. It is a peaceful and beautiful drive that showcases the natural charm of this tiny Alpine principality.
